The year might be coming to an end, but this doesn’t mean the end of musical activities.
After an exclusive premiere on Polish Radio Czworka and features on outlets like Vicious Magazine, Feinstoff, Sinchi Collective, and Les Yeux Orange, Moonlights is finally available for everyone to hear.
It’s been a long time coming, and I’m excited to share the latest (and extended) single from Philosophy of Sound.
Moonlights has quite the history. I laid the foundations of the track over a decade ago during an early collaboration with the Portuguese act Mirror People. Although the musical idea wasn’t used for that project, the chord progression and melody stayed with me. These became the building blocks for what would eventually evolve into Moonlights. Our mysterious vocalist added her distinctive and personal lyrics, and the track started to take shape. We went to the studio to record the vocals, but then life got in the way…
The final version wouldn’t emerge until years later, during the first year of Covid lockdowns in Melbourne. That period brought its own challenges, as restrictions meant collaborators like Sebastian Barahona and I couldn’t work together in the studio—even though we lived just a few hundred metres apart. As a workaround, we brought our laptops to a local park and collaborated outdoors, taking advantage of the small freedoms still permitted at the time.
In the second year of lockdowns, another collaborator, Alou, came on board to assist with the mixing duties. These moments of creativity amidst restrictions brought the project back to life.
The cover art for Moonlights is also deeply personal. It features the garden of my childhood home in Poland, a place I rarely get to visit now. The photo was taken by my mum during the pandemic, and I manipulated it slightly to align with the track’s dreamy title.
Releasing Moonlights with Golden Soul Records feels like the perfect fit. Their dedication to the disco and electronic music scene resonates with the Philosophy of Sound ethos. It’s also an honour to mark their 100th release with this single. The remixes by Pete Herbert and James Rod & Aleito add fresh dimensions to the song, each bringing a unique perspective while preserving its core essence. Rounding out the release as a 5-track offering are two groovy dub mixes, which I hope will keep you moving.
Musically, Moonlights stays true to the Philosophy of Sound identity. You’ll hear the signature funky disco guitar, live basslines, and a touch of nostalgia, all reimagined through a contemporary lens and rooted in my love for indie dance music.
This release marks the beginning of a new chapter for Philosophy of Sound. After a decade of exploring other projects, such as KOshowKO and iubar project, as well as completing my PhD, I’m excited to be back with Philosophy of Sound and new collaborators. Following Moonlights, we’re working on the next single, Alone in the City, which promises to take listeners in an entirely new direction.
For now, though, I hope you’ll enjoy this package. It’s been a journey to bring it to life, and I’m grateful to everyone who’s been part of that process.
